Even after decades abroad and on tour with rugby and business, Killaloe is home for me and my family. The Wood family have had a café (Wood Bros) on main street for 15 years. In 2013 when the opportunity came to move the café to a larger more comfortable location up the street, I couldn’t resist. That was the opportunity I had been looking for, to open a restaurant.
After attending that amazing All Blacks/Ireland match in Chicago (Ireland 40- All Blacks 29) I asked my good friend, Malcom Bell, the largest employer in the twin villages, Ballina-Killaloe, to partner up. A conversation with a good friend and great teacher, Joe Mulcahy led us to find and hire an amazing young Chef, Paddy Collins whose father hailed from Killaloe. The circle was complete and Upstairs at Wood & Bell was opened in Dec 2017.
We couldn’t be more proud and we’re well on our way to helping to establish Killaloe as a culinary destination on par with Adare or Kinsale.
